Northern Walnut (Juglans regia). Walnut Seeds Adapted to Northern Climates

The walnut tree is one of those trees that combines the beauty of large leaves, the changing seasons, longevity, and practical value. It provides welcome shade on hot summer days, develops a broad and impressive crown, and rewards you with walnuts in autumn.

These seeds were collected from a walnut tree that has been successfully growing and producing nuts in a Northern European climate for more than 30 years. The mother tree produces smaller, aromatic walnuts and has proven its resilience to cold winters, late spring frosts, and changing weather conditions over the years.

The nuts are smaller than those of many commercial cultivars, but it is precisely these climate-adapted populations that are often valued for their vitality, resilience, and ability to adapt to local growing conditions.

A walnut tree is planted with the future in mind. Over time, it becomes an important part of the garden and can thrive for generations.

Characteristics of the Northern Walnut

Juglans regia is a large deciduous tree that can reach a height of 15–30 metres under suitable conditions.

When young, it grows relatively quickly and develops a strong root system. Mature trees form a broad, rounded crown that provides generous shade and becomes a striking feature in the landscape.

Walnut trees are long-lived and can live for 100–200 years, sometimes even longer.

In spring, they emerge with large, aromatic leaves, while in autumn they produce walnuts with hard shells and valuable kernels.

A Brief History

The walnut tree is one of the oldest cultivated trees in the world. It was already being grown more than 4,000 years ago in the region of ancient Persia, from where it gradually spread across Europe.

The Romans considered the walnut tree highly valuable and helped spread it throughout Europe. In Latvia and elsewhere in Northern Europe, walnuts were traditionally planted in manor parks and gardens, while today they are increasingly found in private gardens as well.

🍃 More Than Just a Nut Tree

For centuries, the walnut tree has been valued for much more than its nuts. Different parts of the tree have been used in crafts, natural dye production, everyday life, and folk traditions.

The leaves contain aromatic compounds and small amounts of essential oils that give them their distinctive fragrance. When fresh leaves are gently crushed between the fingers, they release a green, resinous, slightly woody aroma that many people associate with summer, sun-warmed foliage, and freshly opened green walnut husks.

It is this aroma that makes the walnut tree special in the garden – its presence can be seen, but also felt.

The green husks and leaves contain natural pigments and dyes. Historically, they were used to dye wool, textiles, wood, and even hair, producing a range of brown and dark brown shades.

Throughout Europe, the walnut tree has also played an important role in traditional herbal practices. Walnut leaves were used to prepare teas, infusions, and baths, while green husks were used in tinctures and for producing natural dyes.

Even today, the walnut tree is appreciated not only as a nut-producing tree but also as a valuable source of natural dyes, plant-based materials, and traditional knowledge.

🌍 Growing Walnut Trees from Seed in Europe

Northern Europe – Latvia, the Baltic States, Scandinavia

Walnut seeds require a cold period known as stratification.

The simplest method is to sow the nuts outdoors in autumn, allowing winter to provide natural stratification.

If sowing in spring, the seeds should be stored in moist sand or another moist medium at 0–5°C for 3–4 months.

The first seedlings usually emerge in spring or early summer.

Southern Europe and Warmer Regions

In warmer regions, natural stratification is not always sufficient.

In these conditions, the seeds should be kept in a refrigerator for 90–120 days before sowing in spring.

Young seedlings require regular moisture, especially during their first summers.

Soil – The Foundation of a Healthy Tree

Walnut trees grow best in:

• well-improved soil
• well-drained locations
• sunny positions
• moderately moist soil

They do not tolerate prolonged waterlogging or heavily compacted soils.

Sowing Seeds and the First Years of Growth

Seeds are usually sown at a depth of 5–8 cm.

During the first years, walnut trees invest much of their energy into developing a strong root system. Above-ground growth may appear slow at first, but later the tree becomes considerably stronger and more vigorous.

Walnut trees dislike frequent transplanting, so it is advisable to choose a suitable permanent location early on.

Caring for Young Trees

Young seedlings require:

• consistent moisture
• protection from weeds
• mulching around the root zone
• protection from rodents during winter

As the tree matures, it becomes increasingly resilient and requires very little maintenance.

🌳 Walnut Trees in the Garden

Best suited for:

• larger gardens
• rural properties
• homesteads
• parks and landscape plantings

A mature walnut tree develops a broad crown and therefore requires sufficient space.

It is a tree planted with the future in mind. Over the years, it becomes a landmark in the garden, a source of shade, and a place around which stories and memories are created.

❄️ Why Choose the Northern Walnut?

These seeds originate from a walnut tree that has successfully grown and produced nuts in a Northern European climate for more than 30 years.

Smaller walnuts do not necessarily mean lower quality. Many northern-grown walnut trees produce not only aromatic nuts but also highly fragrant leaves and pigment-rich green husks.

Such climate-adapted populations are often valued for their vitality, resilience, and ability to adapt to local growing conditions.

Every tree grown from seed will be unique, preserving some of the characteristics of the mother tree while developing its own individuality.

How Fast Does a Walnut Tree Grow?

Under suitable conditions, walnut trees grow relatively quickly.

Trees grown from seed usually begin producing walnuts at approximately 8–15 years of age, sometimes earlier or later depending on growing conditions.

Walnut trees are long-lived and can live for well over 100 years.

Summary

The Northern Walnut is a long-lived, resilient, and valuable tree suitable for cultivation in a wide range of climates.

It is an excellent choice for those who wish to grow their own tree from seed and appreciate natural origin, longevity, and adaptability.
