🎃 Uchiki Kuri, Hokkaido, Red Kuri or Japanese chestnut pumpkin (ウチキクリ/栗かぼちゃ) seeds

Uchiki Kuri pumpkin, also known as Hokkaido or Red Kuri, is a distinctive pumpkin variety (Cucurbita maxima) that stands out for its bright orange-red color, compact size, and mild, nutty flavor. It is a variety that combines reliable yield with excellent taste and an attractive appearance in the garden.

This pumpkin draws attention not only with its color and shape but also with its practicality in the kitchen — its skin is thin and becomes soft after cooking, so it does not need to be peeled. This allows you to use the whole fruit and significantly simplifies preparation.

Uchiki Kuri is suitable for those who value both ease of cultivation and consistent results. It grows well in different conditions and is a reliable choice for both experienced gardeners and those just starting their gardening journey.

🌏 Origin and history

The pumpkin species (Cucurbita maxima) originally comes from South America, where its wild forms were cultivated thousands of years ago. Over time, pumpkins spread to other continents and reached Asia.

In Japan, these plants were carefully selected, favoring varieties with more compact fruits, thinner skin, and richer flavor. This selection process led to the development of Hokkaido-type pumpkins, which became an important part of the local diet.

Uchiki Kuri is one of these selection results — a variety that combines traditional traits with practicality and adaptability to different climates. Today, it is widely grown in Europe, where it is appreciated for both its flavor and ease of cultivation.

🌿 Characteristics

Uchiki Kuri is a vigorous growing plant that produces trailing or climbing vines and develops quickly under good conditions. It is flexible in cultivation and adapts well to different garden environments.

The fruits usually weigh 1–2 kg and have a characteristic pear-like shape with a small “tip.” Their color is deep orange-red, while the flesh is bright orange, dense, and uniform.

This variety stands out for its compact growth and consistent yield, making it especially suitable for home gardens and smaller growing spaces.

🥗 Flavor

Uchiki Kuri has a mild, slightly sweet flavor with distinct chestnut-like, nutty notes. This subtle flavor profile makes it particularly appealing in a wide range of dishes.

After cooking, the flesh becomes creamy and rich while maintaining its structure. Unlike many large pumpkins, it is not watery, so dishes turn out more concentrated and flavorful.

🌱 Sowing and growing

In Northern Europe, Uchiki Kuri is best sown indoors in late April or early May so that the seedlings are ready to be planted outside after the last frost. In warmer regions, it can be sown directly in the soil once the ground has warmed up.

Seeds are sown at a depth of about 2–3 cm. At temperatures of 20–25°C, they germinate in approximately 5–10 days. Since pumpkins do not like root disturbance, it is recommended to sow them in individual pots.

🌿 Seedling care

Uchiki Kuri requires a sunny, warm location and rich, well-drained soil. Plants need sufficient space — about 1–1.5 meters between them — to develop properly.

Excellent results can be achieved by growing it on compost heaps or in raised beds, where the soil is both warm and nutrient-rich. Watering should be regular but without excessive moisture.

🧗 Growing specifics

This variety grows quickly and, under good conditions, produces several fruits per plant. Typically, there are 3–6 pumpkins, but under optimal conditions there can be more.

Regular harvesting encourages the formation of new fruits and ensures continuous production throughout the season. If fewer fruits are left on the plant, they grow larger and develop a more intense flavor.

🍽 Use in the kitchen

Uchiki Kuri is very versatile and suitable for a wide range of dishes. It can be used in soups, roasting, purées, stews, and risottos.

Since the skin is edible, it can be cooked whole or with the skin on, which simplifies preparation and reduces waste.

💚 Properties

This variety stands out for its balanced structure and practicality — thin skin, dense flesh, and rich flavor. It is also well suited to cooler climates and provides a stable, reliable yield.

🌱 Good and bad companions

Choosing the right companion plants is important. Uchiki Kuri grows well alongside beans, peas, and corn, which help improve the soil and support growth. Marigolds and nasturtiums can help reduce pest pressure.

Potatoes may increase the risk of disease, while other cucurbits compete for nutrients and can spread diseases, so they are best planted separately.

📦 Storage

Uchiki Kuri pumpkins store well for several months if kept in a dry and cool place. Over time, their flavor becomes even sweeter and more pronounced.
