Helenium alanthes is a perennial plant, up to 150cm tall. Easy to grow. It likes to grow in sunny and dry places, on ditches. Compact. Forms beautiful bushes.
Rhizome thick, up to 5cm, fleshy and often with several tops. The rhizome also forms lateral roots. Stem erect, hairy, grooved, branched at the top. Leaves large, arranged alternately, elongated elliptical with unevenly toothed edges.
Flower baskets large 3-7cm on thick peduncles, located at the top of the stem. Flowers golden yellow. Fruits - four-sided achenes. The plant blooms in July-August, the fruits ripen in August-September.
The roots of Helenium alanthes are used for medicinal purposes. The roots are dug in the fall, less often in early spring. The collected roots are cleaned of the ground, rinsed in running water, separated from the stems with a knife, cut into pieces and slightly twisted. The roots are dried on sieves or in dryers at a temperature of 35-50C.
The plant is rarely found in the wild in Latvia, but there are cases when it is sown from a garden. More often this plant is cultivated as a medicinal plant.
The roots of Helenium alanthes contain essential oil (<4%). Its smell is somewhat reminiscent of fragrant violets.
Blooms with bright, yellow flowers from July to September.
Sow in spring or autumn in a permanent place or in pots.
Seeds in a package of 10 pcs.
