🥕 White radish variety “Agata” – white, early rutks-type radish for growing from seeds in the garden, pots and greenhouse

The white radish variety “Agata” is an early white radish (rutks-type root vegetable) variety, especially suitable for people who want a fast, easy-to-grow and flavourful white radish harvest. Agata white radishes form small, smooth, white roots with a crisp texture and a pleasantly mild, slightly spicy taste.
This variety is suitable for growing in garden beds, raised beds, large pots, balcony boxes and also indoors during winter, making it a very good choice.

🌱 Variety characteristics

“Agata” is a very early white radish variety with a vegetation period of 20–25 days. The roots are round or slightly oval, with a clean white skin and juicy, firm flesh. The variety is characterised by even root formation, low bitterness and stable flavour quality.

Agata white radishes grow best in cool to moderate conditions. The optimal temperature is +10 to +18 °C. Heat, irregular watering and prolonged drought increase the risk of bolting and can make the taste sharper and the roots more woody. Cooler climates and even moisture promote root development rather than flower stalk formation.

This variety is especially suitable for spring and autumn sowings, as well as for indoor growing during the winter period.

📜 Origin of the white radish variety “Agata”

White radishes have been grown in Europe for centuries, but modern early varieties, including “Agata”, have been bred to ensure fast growth, uniform root quality and good yields.

“Agata” was developed as a white radish line with a mild taste, good resilience and suitability for intensive cultivation in small spaces. The variety has become popular in Central and Northern Europe, especially in gardens and greenhouses where fast harvests and consistent root quality are important.

🌍 Sowing and growing “Agata” white radish from seeds in Europe and worldwide

❄️ Northern Europe (Latvia, the Baltics, Scandinavia and other northern countries)
White radish seeds are sown from March to May, as soon as the soil has thawed and become workable. In greenhouses, sowing can start earlier. During summer, sowing is recommended only in cooler, partially shaded areas. Autumn sowing is carried out at the end of August or beginning of September.

☀️ Southern Europe (Italy, Spain, Greece and other southern countries)
White radish sowing in southern countries is suitable from February to March and in autumn from late September to early November. Due to summer heat, white radish cultivation is not recommended, as plants bolt quickly and form small, deformed roots.

🌎 Other regions
In temperate climates, Agata white radish grows well during any cooler period of the year. In hot regions, it is grown in winter or in high-altitude areas.

🌾 Soil requirements for growing flavourful white radish

White radish requires light, loose, well-drained soil. Heavy, compacted or stony soil causes deformed roots and uneven growth.

Recommended soil mix:
• 40% garden soil or peat-based substrate
• 40% sifted compost
• 20% sand or perlite

❗ Fresh manure should not be used, as it contains nitrogen that promotes leaf growth rather than root development.

🌱 Sowing white radish

White radish is sown in its permanent place – in beds, pots or greenhouses – as it does not tolerate transplanting well. Transplanting damages fine roots and results in small yields with deformed roots.

• White radish seed sowing depth: 1–1.5 cm
• Distance between rows: 10–15 cm
• Distance between plants: 3–5 cm

Seeds germinate within 5–10 days if the soil is evenly moist.

💧 White radish care

Regular and even watering is the most important factor in white radish care. The soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Drying out can make the roots sharp or fibrous. In contrast, infrequent but heavy watering can cause root cracking.

Mulching helps retain moisture and protects the soil from sudden temperature and moisture fluctuations. Fertilising white radish is usually not necessary, which makes this crop easy and rewarding to grow in any home.

🪴 Growing white radish in pots

Agata white radish is very suitable for growing in pots and balcony boxes.

• Pot depth: at least 12–15 cm
• Loose, light soil
• Regular watering
• At least 5–6 hours of light per day, which is easy to ensure even in northern countries

During winter, additional lighting is required if white radish is sown in the darkest winter months.

✔️ Summary

The white radish variety “Agata” is a fast, reliable and easy-to-grow root vegetable choice for people who want fresh, crisp white radish with minimal growing time. As a root vegetable, white radish is especially suitable for the cool season, small growing areas, and cultivation in pots and indoors.
