🥕 Flakkee 2 carrot seeds – classic late carrot variety

The carrot variety “Flakkee 2” is a classic late Flakkee-type carrot that forms long, strong roots with a rich carrot flavour. This carrot variety grown from seed is a reliable choice for gardeners who want carrots with a good yield and excellent storage qualities. Suitable for growing in garden beds and large containers.

🌱 Variety description

“Flakkee 2” is a late carrot variety with conical roots, 18–24 cm long, and an intense orange colour. The Flakkee 2 carrot variety is characterised by a small core, a dense and compact root structure, and a balanced, naturally sweet flavour.
This variety is especially suitable for gardeners who enjoy and appreciate large carrots. Flakkee 2 carrots store very well during the winter period. These carrots are excellent for juices, soups, stews, carrot cakes and carrot bread, as well as for winter supplies – freezing, drying, fermenting, pickling, and more.

📜 History of the Flakkee carrot variety

Flakkee-type carrots were developed through selection in the Netherlands, in the Goeree-Overflakkee region, where already in the 19th century carrots were selected for long, strong roots and good storage ability.
In the 20th century, with the development of agriculture and targeted seed breeding, improved Flakkee lines were created, and “Flakkee 2” became one of the most stable and widely used late carrot varieties in Europe. It is still grown today as a reliable “winter carrot”.

🌍 Sowing and growing Flakkee 2 carrots from seed in Europe and worldwide

❄️ Northern Europe
(Latvia, the Baltic states, Scandinavia, and other countries)

  • Sowing: carrot seeds are sown from mid-April (if spring is warm) until the end of May.

  • The vegetation period of Flakkee 2 carrots is 110–120 days.

  • Regular watering is essential during seed germination. This is often forgotten in the busy spring garden season, but it is worth the effort, as it helps roots grow strong and large.

  • Thinning young carrot plants is important so that roots grow large, healthy, straight, and beautiful.

  • This variety is very well suited for autumn harvest and winter storage.

☀️ Southern Europe
(Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece)

  • Sowing: October–November.

  • Harvest: from February to April.

  • Summer sowing is not suitable in Southern Europe due to heat.

  • Mulching and morning or evening watering improve carrot seed germination.

🌎 Other regions worldwide

  • The Flakkee 2 carrot variety grows well in temperate climates and high-altitude regions.

  • In hotter regions, this variety should be grown during the coolest part of the year.

🌾 Soil requirements for growing carrots from seed

Flakkee 2 carrots require deep, loose, well-drained soil. Compact or stony soil leads to deformed roots, which may look interesting in photos but make storage, peeling, and kitchen use much more difficult.

The best soil mix for carrots:

  • 40% garden soil or peat-based substrate

  • 40% sifted compost

  • 20% sand or perlite

❗ Fresh manure is not recommended.

🌱 Sowing carrots

  • Seed sowing depth in rows or containers: 1–1.5 cm.

  • Distance between rows in the garden: 25–30 cm.

  • When thinning seedlings, leave 6–8 cm between plants.

  • Carrot seeds germinate in 10–21 days if the soil is evenly moist.

  • Carrots must be sown directly in their permanent place; transplanting seedlings causes deformed roots.

💧 Carrot care in the garden

  • Even watering is essential, especially during dry periods. If watering is irregular and followed by heavy watering or rain, roots may crack.

  • Carrots should be weeded carefully without damaging the roots. This is important while plants are small; later, weeds grow very little or not at all between mature carrots.

  • Mulching helps retain soil moisture, especially during very hot summers.

  • Carrots should be fertilised very lightly or not at all if proper crop rotation is practiced – too much nitrogen promotes leaf growth rather than root development.

⏳ Harvesting carrots

Flakkee 2 carrots are ready for harvest in autumn when the roots have reached full size and the leaves begin to yellow slightly.
Harvesting is best done in dry weather – first, it is much more pleasant than working in mud, and second, carrots are cleaner and store better.

🌿 Companion planting with carrots

🤝 Good companions

  • Onions, garlic, leeks

  • Peas, beans

  • Lettuce, radishes

  • Dill, coriander

🚫 Poor companions

  • Potatoes

  • Beets

  • Fennel

  • Celery

  • Parsnips

🪴 Growing carrots in containers from seed

  • Container depth should be at least 30–40 cm.

  • Choosing a wide, stable container ensures a better harvest.

  • Loose, stone-free soil.

  • Regular watering is essential, especially in containers.

  • During the growing period, at least 6 hours of sunlight is required; in very hot sun, light shade is recommended.

✔️ Summary

The carrot variety “Flakkee 2” is a classic late carrot for gardeners who want a generous harvest, long-lasting nutritional value, and winter supplies. It is a modest, strong carrot variety that rewards patience with large, beautiful carrots.
