🍅 Sandra’s Smile (Ulybka Sandry) – beautiful, multicolored and sweet tomato seeds

The tomato Sandra’s Smile is a unique, multicolored large-fruited tomato variety that originated in Russian amateur selection. This tomato is a treasure in every garden, as it combines excellent flavor, decorative, colorful large fruits, and stable yield.
Sandra’s Smile attracts attention with its orange–yellow base tone, olive-green and bronze stripes, as well as its sweet, creamy-mealy flesh. It is an excellent choice for greenhouses in Northern Europe and for gardens in the warm regions of Southern Europe.

🌿 Variety characteristics

• Sandra’s Smile is a tall, indeterminate tomato
• Height: 1.7–2 m
• Ripening time: 105–115 days
• Average yield: 3–5 kg per tomato plant
• Self-pollinating tomato variety
• Original name: Ulybka Sandry
• A large-fruited, visually stunning multicolored tomato with a vivid and interesting color combination
• Suitable for greenhouses in Northern Europe and open gardens in Southern Europe

🍊 Flavor

• Very sweet, with notes of tropical fruit
• Creamy, soft, yet firm flesh
• The aroma is excellent — with hints of honey, peach, and ripe melon; one could say this tomato smells like summer and adventure
• Large 250–500 g fruits with a beautifully wavy, multicolored mosaic
• Perfect for salads, tomato carpaccio, caprese, and sandwiches — looks very beautiful and tastes delicious

🌱 Sowing and growing Sandra’s Smile tomatoes from seeds

Northern Europe
Sowing time: March – early April.
• When growing tomato seedlings from seeds, it is important to avoid cold air coming from windowsills, which often leads to the so-called “black leg” and causes the early formation of rot, which will appear later during growth in the greenhouse.
• If natural light is insufficient, grow lights must be used. This is very important for this variety, as elongated seedlings produce less fruit and may begin to develop diseases. Therefore, it is important to consider carefully when to sow tomatoes so that they later delight with their flavor and aroma. Following good sowing principles significantly reduces work in the greenhouse and ensures healthier plants.

Southern Europe:
Sowing time: January – early March.
The principles of growing Sandra’s Smile tomatoes from seeds are similar to those in Northern Europe.

Sowing depth: about 0.5–1 cm; it is important that the soil is warm. Tomato seeds can be sown in fine-structured peat substrate.
Germination conditions: 22–26°C. Light is extremely important for this variety, especially in the seedling phase — 14–16 hours of light are required. In Northern Europe, grow lights or a heated greenhouse are recommended.

🌿 Seedling cultivation

• Transplant seedlings when 1–2 true leaves appear
• Plant deeply — up to the cotyledons, to ensure a stronger root system
• For this variety, it is important to water tomato seedlings moderately and evenly — this ensures strong growth and helps prevent fruit cracking later. This applies to all tomato varieties with thin skin. Therefore, this variety is worth planting alongside other large-fruited thin-skinned tomatoes — easier care, more joy
• This tomato variety should be grown with 2 stems to obtain large, beautiful, and high-quality fruits. With 3 stems, fruits and yield will be smaller
• Side shoots should be pinched carefully and never during the hottest part of the day
• Good ventilation in the greenhouse is essential
• Before planting out, seedlings must be hardened off — ideally in a greenhouse or a sunny, sheltered outdoor spot; temperature fluctuations must be avoided, and hardening must be done gradually

🌞 Growing in greenhouse and garden

Northern Europe — best grown in a greenhouse:
• Warmth without sharp temperature fluctuations and even moisture is essential. The soil must not be allowed to dry out completely; if it does, moisture must be increased gradually — sudden overwatering causes cracking
• Alternatively, tomatoes can be grown in pots on a sunny, sheltered terrace or balcony; sturdy supports are necessary because, under good conditions, fruits grow large and heavy, and branches may break

Southern Europe — an excellent garden variety:
• Hot southern sun produces intense sweetness and vivid fruit coloration
• Mulching and drip irrigation are recommended; in the hottest periods, 20–40% shade netting helps prevent sunburn
• In extreme heat, blossoms may drop, reducing yield

🍽 Flavor formation factors

🌞 Sun
• The more sun, the sweeter and more aromatic Sandra’s Smile tomatoes become
• In shaded areas, fruits become duller, softer, and more watery, losing part of their exceptional flavor

💧 Moisture
• This variety requires consistent watering
• Sudden soil moisture fluctuations must be avoided to prevent cracking

🌡 Temperature
• Ideal temperature for tomato growth is 24–30°C
• Hot days and cool nights produce more intense aroma

🌱 Fertilizing tomatoes:
• Potassium enhances sweetness and vivid fruit color — the main attribute of Sandra’s Smile
• Calcium ensures firm, concentrated flesh
• Nitrogen must be used carefully — too much causes watery flesh, excessive foliage, and low yield; lots of work, small results
