🍅 Pink Oxheart (Rozā vērša sirds) – heirloom large-fruited tomato seeds

Pink Oxheart (Rozā vērša sirds) is an old heirloom variety that belongs to the classic oxheart-type tomatoes. Heart-shaped tomatoes have been known in Europe and America since the late 19th and early 20th century, when they first gained popularity and were offered in early seed trade catalogues and widely grown in family gardens.
Pink Oxheart tomatoes are especially valued for their mild acidity, balanced sweetness and dense, fleshy texture. This is a tomato that carries the original tomato flavor balance from times when store-bought tomatoes did not all taste the same. Oxheart-type tomatoes got their name from the distinctly heart-shaped fruit – broad at the stem and narrowing toward the bottom.

🌿 Characteristics of “Pink Oxheart”
Indeterminate (tall-growing) tomato.
Height: 1.6–2.2 m
Ripening time – approx. 90–105 days, depending on growing conditions.
Yield approx. 4–7 kg of tomatoes per plant.
Self-pollinating variety, meaning no other tomatoes are needed for fruit to form.

An old, valuable heirloom variety with impressively large, tasty fruits.

🍅 Flavor of Pink Oxheart tomatoes
Mild, balanced sweetness with low to medium acidity.
Dense, fleshy texture with few seeds.
Thin skin and a concentrated “old garden tomato” flavor.
Very large, firm tomatoes, 400–900 g depending on plant training and balanced fertilization.
Pink Oxheart is one of the most classic and impressive large pink tomato varieties.

🌿 Sowing and seedling growing for Pink Oxheart
Sowing:
Northern Europe: early March – mid-April. If tomatoes are kept on a windowsill, be careful of cold air that can lower soil temperature and encourage seedling diseases. If there is no grow light, it is better to sow tomatoes later – the seedlings will grow healthier.
Southern Europe: February–March
Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep.
Germination requires 22–26°C and 14–16 h of light.

Seedling growing:
Young tomato seedlings are pricked out when 1–2 true leaves have developed.
Plant tomato seedlings deep, up to the cotyledons, this helps develop stronger roots.
It is important to water Pink Oxheart tomatoes evenly and avoid overwatering, as moisture fluctuations can cause fruit cracking, which damages them visually and can also create a good environment for diseases.
Poor ventilation in the greenhouse can increase the risk of rot and reduce yield, here the principle applies – better slightly cooler, but with fresh air.
Before transplanting, harden off the seedlings gradually, avoiding cold and strong wind.

🌞 Growing in greenhouse and outdoors
🏡 Northern Europe – best to grow Pink Oxheart in a greenhouse
Stable, even temperatures in the greenhouse ensure abundant Pink Oxheart production and full ripening.
In a greenhouse it is easier to control soil moisture and prevent cracking, which is very important for this variety so that tomatoes grow large and beautiful.
At the end of August, topping the plants is recommended so fruits can ripen, basically you cut off the top and all flowers, and carefully evaluate which tomatoes will ripen and which will not. Watering should be reduced unless August is extremely hot.

☀️ Southern Europe – Pink Oxheart can also be grown outdoors
Strong sun enhances the rich tomato flavor and balanced umami that makes this tomato unique.
It is highly recommended to mulch the soil after planting Pink Oxheart tomatoes, this is important to maintain even soil moisture.
In very hot weather flower drop may occur, so location is important, preferably with some natural shade during intense midday heat, otherwise flowers may drop and yield decreases.

🍽 What influences the outstanding flavor of Pink Oxheart?
Sun – the more sun, the more concentrated the flavor and stronger the umami taste, and the tomato becomes sweeter.
Moisture – even watering ensures high-quality tomato flesh and naturally concentrated flavor and prevents cracking. The tomato also holds its ‘shape’ well when sliced.
Temperature – the ideal temperature for tomatoes is +22–28°C. If days are warm but nights cooler around +16°C, a stronger tomato aroma develops. The plant itself stays healthy and fruits ripen evenly.

🌱 Fertilizing Pink Oxheart:
Proper fertilization is very important for this variety to show its full potential.
Potassium increases sweetness and fruit color intensity. Calcium strengthens fruit structure, which is especially important for tomatoes that are best enjoyed fresh.
Excess nitrogen produces too much green growth and fewer fruits. Energy goes into foliage. The plant will look beautiful, lush and green, but fruits will be small and pale. The popular weed or nettle fertilizer contains a lot of nitrogen, so it must be carefully evaluated when and where to use it.
