🍅 Tomato variety “Black Ball (Black Balls)” – beautiful, sweet and productive black tomato seeds for the garden and greenhouse

The tomato variety “Black Ball” is a decorative, sweet and very productive black tomato. This variety is suitable for growing in a greenhouse, balcony pots, terraces and gardens in Southern Europe. In Northern Europe, Black Ball is safest to grow in a greenhouse or on a sunny, wind-protected terrace, because in an open garden the strong wind can easily break the plants. The Black Ball tomato variety is very new, created around the year 2020, which makes it a real treasure in any tomato collection. The Black Ball variety also stores very well and can be eaten all the way until December. Even when harvested green, this tomato does not lose its flavor if stored correctly.

🌱 Variety characteristics

“Black Ball” is an indeterminate (tall) tomato with a long, stable harvest and a visually very beautiful black color. This tomato variety will not leave any gardener or guest indifferent.

• Dark brown to almost black fruits
• Bright red and juicy tomato flesh
• Sweet, rich flavor that stands out from other tomato varieties – a true discovery for flavor hunters
• 8–10 tomatoes form in one cluster
• Suitable for greenhouses, pots and wind-protected places. In Southern Europe, it grows well outdoors or next to pergolas.

The Black Ball tomato variety is especially loved by collectors because of its color and sweet taste. It will appeal to gardeners who want something new in their garden — something unique that others don’t have.

📜 Variety history

“Black Ball” is a modern Central European breeding tomato variety created to combine decorative dark color with high productivity and good storage potential.
It is one of the modern black tomato varieties that quickly became popular in hobby gardens and among seed collectors.

🌍 Sowing and growing tomatoes from seed in Europe

❄️ Northern Europe (Latvia, Baltics, Scandinavia and other countries)

• Tomato seeds are sown from March to April in seedling trays
• Seedlings are planted in the greenhouse in May
• Growing outdoors is not recommended because strong winds often break even tied tomatoes, tear off leaves and snap branches
• Safest places: greenhouse, terrace, balcony, next to a house wall where it is sunny and wind-protected
• Black Ball tomatoes are grown with a single stem and must be tied regularly

☀️ Southern Europe (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece)

• Black Ball tomato seeds are sown from January to February in seedling trays
• Planted in the garden or greenhouse from March to April
• Can be grown outdoors because the climate is warm, stable and with fewer wind risks
• Partial shade at midday is recommended in hot climates to prevent sunburn
• When growing Black Ball in pots, be prepared to water often — black pots dry out extremely fast in heat

🌾 Soil requirements for growing Black Ball tomatoes from seed

Tomatoes need loose, rich, nutrient-filled and well-drained soil.
Recommended soil mix:

For the first sowing stage, seeds grow very well in fine neutralized peat because the roots develop easily. For transplanted seedlings, this soil mix works best:

• 40% substrate (important: not soil from the garden, but store-bought to avoid weed seeds or diseases) mixed with medium-fraction neutralized peat
• 40% rich black soil (heat-treated and ready-to-use store-bought)
• 20% perlite or coconut fiber

The soil must be warm — cold and wet conditions slow growth. This is especially important during germination and early seedling growth. Tomatoes grown on windowsills may suffer from cold drafts from windows, causing seeds not to germinate or leading to rot in young seedlings.

🌱 Sowing depth for seeds

0.5–1 cm, seeds germinate in 5–12 days under good conditions.
Tomatoes must be transplanted into individual pots when two true leaves appear.
When planting Black Ball tomatoes in their permanent growing place, the plant should be formed with one stem — this gives a noticeably larger harvest. Side shoots should be removed once per week.

💧 Tomato care in greenhouses, pots and protected spaces

• Water deeply and regularly without overwatering or letting the soil dry completely
• Ventilate the greenhouse every day; during summer heat or rainy periods, it’s better to keep the greenhouse open all day and night
• Fertilize every 7–10 days with a potassium-rich fertilizer once the first flowers appear
• Mulching improves flavor and keeps moisture — use grass clippings, wood chips, sawdust, or even cardboard as an experimental mulch
• Regularly tie tomatoes to supports because the fruit clusters become very heavy

⏳ Harvesting

Black Ball tomatoes ripen 70–85 days after planting in their permanent place.
Ripe fruits are dark brown or black with bright red flesh and a sweet, rich flavor.
In a greenhouse, Black Ball tomatoes produce fruit until mid-autumn.

🌿 Tomato companion planting in the garden

🤝 Good companions

Basil, marigolds, carrots, spinach, parsley, celery

🚫 Bad companions

Potatoes, peppers and chili, eggplants, corn, fennel

🪴 Growing in pots on terraces and balconies (especially important in Northern Europe)

• Pot size: 20–30 liters
• Needs 6+ hours of sun
• Must be watered more often than in the garden or greenhouse
• Plant is formed with one stem and tied to a strong support because Black Ball makes heavy clusters
• Mulch protects roots from overheating — black pots can overheat in summer and dry out extremely fast

This is the safest way to grow healthy and productive Black Ball tomatoes in Northern Europe.

✔️ Summary

The tomato variety “Black Ball” is suitable for greenhouses, balcony pots, terraces and gardens in Southern Europe. Growing outdoors in Northern Europe is not recommended because of strong winds.
This variety offers beautiful dark tomatoes that always attract attention. Black Ball tomatoes are sweet and productive — a great choice for beginners, collectors and true flavor hunters.
