🌿 Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Thyme is a perennial, aromatic and highly valuable herb widely used in cooking, natural medicine, and skincare.
It is one of the oldest and most appreciated Mediterranean herbs, still cherished and used all over the world today.

🪴 Botanical description

  • Height: up to 30–40 cm

  • Type: perennial, low-growing, bushy plant

  • Leaves: small, grey-green, aromatic

  • Flowers: tiny, pink or violet, blooming abundantly from June to August

  • Fragrance: warm, slightly citrus-like

  • Taste: spicy, peppery, with a light hint of bitterness

Thyme loves the sun and dry, even poor soil conditions. It can be grown both in the garden and indoors in pots, so you always have a fresh sprig at hand.

🌱 Growing from seed

  • Sowing time: indoors from March to April; outdoors in a permanent spot from May to June.

  • Soil requirements: light, dry, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline.

  • Sowing: seeds are very small — sow them on the surface and gently press into the moist soil.

  • Germination: 2–4 weeks at +18…+22 °C.

  • Transplanting: after frost, in a sunny, warm location, spacing plants 20–30 cm apart.

  • Care: water moderately, avoid overfeeding, and prune after flowering to keep a compact shape.

🌾 Nutritional and health benefits

Thyme is rich in essential minerals and vitamins:

  • Potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium, manganese, selenium,

  • Omega-3 fatty acids and folic acid.

These nutrients help maintain a healthy metabolism, strengthen the immune system, and improve circulation.
Thyme naturally supports antioxidant activity and protects cells from oxidative stress.

☕ Thyme tea – a natural remedy

Thyme tea is a well-known natural aid for coughs and sore throats.

  • Soothes bronchitis and upper respiratory infections.

  • Eases breathing and calms irritation in the throat.

  • Has a relaxing effect, making it especially helpful for people prone to colds.

💡 Tip:
Enjoy thyme tea regularly – 1–2 cups a day, especially during the cold season.

🌸 Additional benefits

  • Natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent – useful for mouth rinses and skincare.

  • Attracts bees and pollinators when grown in gardens or greenhouses.

  • A great companion plant, deterring pests and preventing fungal diseases.

  • In greenhouses, thyme helps maintain ecological balance – its scent repels aphids, whiteflies, certain flies, and even voles and moles that dislike its strong aroma.

❄️ Winter hardiness

  • Common thyme tolerates temperatures down to –10 °C when planted in dry, sheltered locations protected from wind.

  • To protect plants from cold and excess moisture, cover them with spruce branches or a light garden fleece in late autumn. This keeps the roots dry and safe through winter.

🌿 Why invite thyme into your garden?

Thyme is easy to grow and resilient, adding fragrance and vitality to your garden.
It enriches meals, supports health, and attracts beneficial insects that help keep plants balanced.
A small thyme patch in your garden or pot will be a practical, beautiful, and natural addition to your everyday life.
