🌿 Sweet Basil Seeds – Aromatic and Classic Herb for Your Garden

Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is one of the most beloved herb and garden seed varieties.
It brings fresh, spicy fragrance to your dishes, adds a green, compact accent to the garden, and fills your home with a touch of summer all year round.
This plant is perfect for improving garden microclimates and repelling pests, making Sweet Basil a true garden classic.

🌸 Description and Origin

Sweet basil is an annual, heat-loving plant originating from South Asia and India, where it has been cultivated for centuries as both a culinary and medicinal herb.
Over time, Sweet Basil spread worldwide, becoming an essential herb in gardens and kitchens everywhere.

Height: 30–60 cm (depending on growing conditions)
Leaves: smooth, bright green, with the classic basil scent
Flowers: small, white or pale pink
Flavour: spicy and refreshing
Properties: antibacterial, calming, aids digestion

Basil contains essential oils, especially eugenol, which gives it its distinctive aroma and flavour – the reason it remains an irreplaceable garden herb.

🌱 Sowing and Growing – Basil Seeds for Your Garden

Growing Sweet Basil from seed is an easy and rewarding way to enhance any home or garden.
It helps reduce pest activity and brings an eco-friendly balance to your green space.

Basil can be sown indoors, in greenhouses, garden beds, or pots on a balcony or windowsill.

Sowing time: March – May
Germination temperature: +20 – 25 °C
Germination time: 7 – 14 days
Sowing method: sow shallowly – gently press the seeds onto moist soil
Spacing: 25 – 30 cm between plants

To keep basil bushy, pinch back the growing tips regularly.
Remove flower buds so the plant directs its energy to producing leaves and extends the harvest season.

💡 Tip: Sweet basil can also be grown in winter with grow lights (fitolamps).
Keep the plant away from cold drafts – its “feet” should always stay warm, especially on the windowsill.

🌤️ Care and Gardening Tips

  • Grow in a sunny, warm location, as light enhances essential oil production.

  • Water evenly, avoiding waterlogging.

  • Fertilise moderately to maintain strong aroma and healthy growth.

  • The best flavour and scent develop before flowering.

  • Sweet basil is an excellent helper in gardening, improving soil quality and balancing garden micro-life.

🍃 Companion Plants

Sweet basil is a valuable companion plant – its fragrance repels pests and supports neighbouring plants’ health.
It also attracts bees and butterflies, helping pollinate the garden naturally.

Grows well with:

  • tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and strawberries;

  • flowers such as roses, marigolds, calendulas, and lavender.

Avoid planting next to: onions, garlic, sage, or rosemary.

🍽️ Culinary and Medicinal Use

Sweet basil is a versatile kitchen herb that enriches both everyday meals and herbal teas.
It adds a refreshing note to:

  • pasta, pizza, pesto, and salads;

  • tomato and vegetable dishes;

  • soups, sauces, and drinks;

  • fruit desserts and teas.

Basil leaves can be used fresh, dried, or frozen, keeping their rich aroma even after drying in the shade.
Basil tea is warming and soothing, helping to reduce stress and support digestion.
