🌿 Grandma’s Garlic Air Bulbils (Seeds)

Grandma’s garlic is a strong, resilient, and time-tested garlic variety whose story begins in the distant Ural Mountains. That is where my grandmother was born — a Latvian whose family moved deep into Russia in search of land and a new start. The garlic that grew in those harsh conditions became intensely aromatic, richly flavored, and naturally resistant to common garlic diseases.

After the war, my grandmother returned to Latvia and brought along one small but meaningful thing — a single garlic clove.
That clove took root in Latvian soil and has now been growing for more than half a century. Today, this garlic has become a true family heirloom — known for its vigor, health, stable harvests, and ability to grow almost anywhere, even in a meadow.

These are air bulbils (seeds) — the most natural, safe, and healthy way to propagate and preserve this unique variety.

🌱 Seeds and Planting

When to plant?

Autumn:
• late September – October

Spring:
• April – May

Air bulbils can be planted directly in garden beds, raised beds, or even pots — where they create a lovely decorative accent as they grow and form stems. The green garlic shoots make an excellent base for a delicious, healthy pesto.

How to plant?

• Planting depth: 2–3 cm
• Spacing between bulbils: ~5 cm
• Spacing between rows: 20–25 cm
• Soil should be loose, light, well-drained, and the planting location should ideally be sunny

Important: This variety is extremely resilient — the air bulbils are not sensitive and germinate well even in less-than-ideal conditions.

🌱 Air Bulbil Growth Cycle

Year 1

A planted air bulbil grows into a small, round garlic bulb (without clove division).
This bulb is clean, healthy, and vigorous, perfect for planting the following year.

Year 2

After replanting, it develops over the season into a full-sized garlic bulb with cloves — just like the garlic my grandmother used to grow.

🌞 Growing in the Garden

Grandma’s garlic thrives in a wide range of conditions — it tolerates drought, rainy summers, and acidic or poorer soils. This is one of the easiest garlic varieties to grow.

💧 Watering

• No special watering is required
• For larger cloves, moderate watering early in the season is beneficial

🌾 Fertilizing

• In spring — a light application of organic fertilizer when the first shoots appear
• If grown in well-cared-for soil, no additional fertilizing is necessary

🧄 What Makes This Garlic Special?

  1. Naturally hardy — shaped by a harsh climate and used to rapid weather changes.

  2. Historic variety — grown in Latvia for over 50 years, brought from the Urals and formed through natural selection.

  3. Outstanding flavor — aromatic, strong, and concentrated.

  4. Safe propagation — air bulbils do not spread diseases and ensure healthy future harvests.

  5. Reliable yields — performs well every year, even under challenging conditions.

✨ Summary

Grandma’s Garlic Air Bulbils (Seeds) are an excellent choice if you want a hardy, healthy, and stable garlic variety with a meaningful, authentic story — one shaped naturally over decades.

Within a couple of seasons, one air bulbil grows into a strong, firm, and aromatic garlic bulb, perfectly suited to the climate of Latvia and Northern Europe.
