Basil “Genovese” – aromatic basil seeds for your garden, pots and flower beds

Basil “Genovese” basil seeds are an excellent choice if you want to grow a fresh, intensely aromatic, decorative and healthy herb that brings a distinctive Mediterranean flavour to your dishes. This is the basil whose taste most people associate with classic pesto, tomatoes and mozzarella.

Growing Genovese basil from seed is simple and easy. It grows quickly, is low-maintenance, and forms a beautifully fragrant little shrub when you follow a few basic sowing and growing principles.

🌸 Characteristics & origin

Genovese basil is a traditional variety from the Liguria region of Italy — the very basil used to make authentic pesto. These basil seeds produce lush, vibrant and wonderfully aromatic plants.

Height: 40–60 cm
Growth habit: compact, full, beautifully shaped bush
Leaves: soft, juicy green leaves
Aroma: sweet, classic “pesto” aroma
Suitable for: gardens, pots, terraces, balconies, flower beds
Origin: Liguria, Italy

🌱 Sowing & growing

Genovese basil grows quickly, and its sowing process is very simple.

Sowing time: March–May (indoors – all year round; supplemental light is helpful during dark northern winters)
Germination temperature: +20…25 °C
Germination: 7–14 days
How to sow: lightly press the basil seeds into the soil surface without covering them
Spacing: 20–25 cm between plants, or 2–3 plants per pot

Once the plants grow, pinch the tips to form a beautiful, compact bush.
Remove flower buds to keep the leaves aromatic and bright green.

🌤️ Care

  • ☀️ Light: a sunny spot in the garden, on the terrace or balcony

  • 💧 Watering: even moisture, avoid waterlogging

  • 🌱 Feeding: every 2–3 weeks with a light fertiliser

  • 🌿 Climate: warmth and stable conditions create the best aroma

  • 🪴 Ideal for: pots, containers, greenhouses, flower beds

With good growing conditions, your basil will form a compact bush with soft, juicy green leaves.

🍃 Companion planting

Grows well with:

  • tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers

  • aubergines

  • strawberries

  • marigolds, tagetes, roses

Less suitable next to: sage, rosemary, onions, garlic.

🍽️ Culinary use

A classic Mediterranean flavour, perfect for:

  • pesto

  • salads

  • pizza

  • dishes with tomatoes and mozzarella

  • fresh sauces and everyday cooking

Growing basil from seed gives you the pleasure of watching the whole process — from a tiny seed to a beautiful, fragrant and delicious plant that becomes a highlight of your kitchen and garden.
