Discover the warmth and sweetness of tiger nuts, also known as earth almonds – tiny treasures filled with sunshine, hiding beneath the soil.
They are not only delicious and healthy but also surprisingly easy to grow, even in northern gardens.
Plant a few tiger nuts, let them soak up the sun, and by autumn, you’ll be rewarded with a harvest that tastes like summer itself. 🌞

🌿 Tiger Nuts – Earth Almonds That Taste Like Sunshine

Tiger nuts (Cyperus esculentus) are small, brown tubers that grow beneath lush, green foliage.
Sweet, nutty, and delightfully simple – they’re like nature’s candy.
Originally from the warm Mediterranean region, tiger nuts can be grown successfully even in Latvia and other temperate countries with a bit of care and warmth.
Once you taste your own harvest, you’ll understand why they’re so special. 🌞

🌸 Plant Characteristics

Latin name: Cyperus esculentus
Height: 30–60 cm
Blooming period: July–September
Foliage: dense, vigorous, narrow-leaved
Life form: perennial grass-like plant with underground tubers

Tiger nuts are compact yet resilient plants with vibrant green leaves and delicate, yellowish-green flower clusters. The magic happens underground – that’s where the small, sweet tubers develop, ready to surprise you at harvest time.

🌱 How to Grow Tiger Nuts

Although tiger nuts love warmth, they grow well even in northern gardens – you just need to follow a few simple steps to ensure a good yield.
Growing them is easy – it’s more of a joyful experiment with a delicious reward.

  • Preparation: Soak the tubers (seeds) in warm water for 1–2 days before planting.

  • Sowing: Late April to May – start in pots indoors or in a greenhouse.

  • Transplanting outdoors: After the last frost (late May–June).

  • Soil: light, warm, well-drained, with a neutral pH.

  • Spacing: 20–25 cm between plants, 40–50 cm between rows.

  • Watering: keep the soil moist, but not wet.

💧 Tip: Tiger nuts love sunlight. For the best harvest, choose a sunny spot or grow them in a greenhouse.

🌾 Harvest and Storage

In autumn, when the leaves start to yellow and dry, it’s time for the big reveal – under each plant you’ll find a handful of small, wrinkled brown tubers.
They are fragrant, sweet, and taste a bit like almonds with a hint of coconut.

  • Harvest like potatoes – gently loosen and lift the soil.

  • Wash and dry in a warm, airy place.

  • Store in a cool, dry environment until the next season.

Save some of the best tubers for replanting next year.

💧 Nutritional Value

Tiger nuts are not just a treat – they’re a true energy source from nature.
They contain:

  • plenty of fiber to support digestion,

  • healthy fats similar to those in olive oil,

  • magnesium, iron, and vitamin E,

  • and are naturally gluten- and dairy-free.

That’s why they’re loved by vegetarians, athletes, and anyone seeking wholesome, natural food.

🥛 How to Enjoy Tiger Nuts

  • Soaked and soft – a naturally sweet, healthy snack.

  • Ground – tiger nut flour is great for cookies and pancakes.

  • As a drink – make the famous Spanish horchata de chufa, a creamy, refreshing beverage with almond and vanilla notes.

  • Oil – perfect for both cooking and natural skincare.

🌺 Fun Facts

  • Tiger nuts were known to ancient Egyptians – found even in pharaohs’ tombs.

  • In Spain, they are called “chufas,” and the famous horchata de chufa is their national summer drink.

  • Each tiny tuber holds a balance of life, sweetness, and sunshine.

🌾 Tips for Growers

  • Don’t worry if growth seems slow at first – tiger nuts grow gradually.

  • The key is warm soil and full sun.

  • Harvest before frost and dry tubers thoroughly.

  • Keep some for next year’s planting.
