🌿 Ancient Asparagus – The Green Classic of Latvian Gardens

Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) is a long-lived perennial vegetable that can thrive in the same spot for more than twenty years.
In Latvia, asparagus has been known since the days of manor gardens, and in some places, old plants still survive as living relics of historical gardens.
Today, this early spring vegetable is once again cherished for its delicate flavor and graceful appearance.

🌾 Preparing the Seeds

Asparagus seeds have a hard outer shell and germinate slowly, so it’s best to soak them in warm water (25–30 °C / 77–86 °F) for 1–2 days before sowing.
After soaking, wrap the seeds in a damp cloth and keep them warm for a few more days until tiny sprouts appear. This helps speed up germination and ensures stronger seedlings.

🌱 Sowing in Pots or Trays

Sow asparagus in late March or early April in a warm, bright place.
Use a light, fertile potting mix and sow 1–1.5 cm deep, spacing the seeds about 5 cm apart.
Seeds usually germinate after 2–3 weeks. Once seedlings emerge, move them to a well-lit area to prevent them from stretching.

🌿 Transplanting into the Garden

When the seedlings are about 10 cm tall and the weather is stable, they are ready to be transplanted outdoors.
Choose a sunny, well-drained, and fertile soil protected from strong winds.
Dig furrows about 25–30 cm deep, spacing the rows 80–100 cm apart, and leave 30–40 cm between plants.
In the first year, the plants will focus on developing their root systems, so keep the soil moist and free of weeds.

☀️ Care and Harvest

Asparagus is a long-lasting and rewarding plant that repays your patience.
Do not harvest in the first year; in the second year, you can cut a few shoots, and from the third year onward, enjoy the full harvest.
Harvest shoots when they are 15–20 cm tall, before the tips begin to open.
In autumn, when the foliage turns yellow, cut it down to soil level and lightly cover the bed with compost or peat.

💚 A Living Relic of Old Gardens

The ancient asparagus is resilient, adapted to the northern climate, and can grow in one place for decades.
It tells a story of patience, nature, and spring’s renewal – a plant that reawakens each year, bringing the first touch of green and reminding us that every garden begins again.
