🥒 Cucumbers “Delikatese” – classic, tasty and time-tested field cucumber seeds

“Delikatese” is an old, time-tested cucumber variety that comes from European gardening traditions. It is one of those varieties that has not lost its value over the years — easy to grow, reliable in yield, and truly delicious.

These cucumbers stand out with their crisp, juicy flesh and classic cucumber flavor without bitterness. They are perfect both for fresh consumption and for preserving, and often this very variety brings back that “real cucumber” taste many remember from childhood.

🌿 Variety description

“Delikatese” is a strong and vigorous field cucumber that produces a stable and abundant harvest. The plant grows moderately strong, branches well, and continues producing throughout the season as long as the fruits are harvested regularly.

The cucumbers mature in about 50–65 days, and the harvest develops gradually rather than all at once, allowing you to enjoy fresh cucumbers over a longer period. The fruits are cylindrical, 10–20 cm long, dark green with small bumps and a thin yet durable skin.

This variety requires pollination, so it’s important to have bees or other insects in the garden. If there are few, you can also help by pollinating manually.

“Delikatese” adapts well to different weather conditions and is suitable for growing both outdoors and in greenhouses.

🥗 Taste

These cucumbers have a clean, fresh, and balanced flavor without bitterness. The flesh is crisp and juicy, with a pleasant texture and mild aroma.

They are very versatile — perfect for fresh salads, light salting, as well as pickling and preserving. Even after processing, they retain their crunch, which is especially appreciated.

🌱 Sowing and growing from seeds

In Northern Europe, cucumbers are usually started indoors in late April or May and later planted outside after the last frost. It’s important to choose a warm, sunny, and wind-protected location. For earlier harvests, plastic covers or greenhouses are often used.

In Southern Europe, sowing can be done earlier, usually in April or May, and seeds can often be sown directly into the soil. Here it’s important to pay attention to watering and heat — during very hot days, plants may need some light shade.

Seeds are sown about 1–2 cm deep, and the optimal germination temperature is 22–28°C. They usually sprout within 4–8 days. Cucumbers do not tolerate transplanting well, so it’s best to sow them directly in pots or in their permanent place.

🌿 Growing seedlings

Cucumber seedlings need a warm, sunny environment and consistent moisture. It’s best to use warm water for watering, as cold water can stress the plants.

Plants can be grown on supports or allowed to spread along the ground. Growing on trellises helps ensure better air circulation and healthier plants. It’s recommended to leave about 40–70 cm between plants to avoid overcrowding and ensure proper airflow.

📈 Yield

“Delikatese” cucumbers are rewarding in yield — one plant can produce about 2 to 4 kilograms of cucumbers, usually around 15–30 fruits.

The harvest develops gradually, and regular picking helps the plant continue producing new fruits. The more often you harvest, the longer the plant will keep producing.

🍽 In the kitchen

These cucumbers are true all-rounders in the kitchen. They are perfect in fresh salads, ideal for light salting, and keep their crunch even when pickled or preserved.

They are simple but very tasty — the kind you want to eat straight from the garden.

💚 Nutritional value and properties

Cucumbers consist mostly of water, making them great for hydration, especially in summer. They also contain potassium and other minerals that help maintain balance in the body.

They are easy to digest, refreshing, and suitable for everyday consumption.

🌱 Good and bad companion plants

Companion plants are very important for cucumbers, as they can affect both plant health and yield. The right plants help attract pollinators, improve the soil, and protect against pests.

Good companions for cucumbers include beans and peas, which enrich the soil with nitrogen and help plants grow stronger. Dill and basil also attract bees and other pollinators needed for fruit formation.

Marigolds and nasturtiums are also great additions to the garden, helping reduce pests, while lettuce and radishes cover the soil and help retain moisture.

On the other hand, potatoes and tomatoes are not good neighbors, as they can spread diseases and compete for nutrients. Herbs like sage and rosemary can also inhibit cucumber growth. It’s also not recommended to plant cucumbers next to other cucurbits, as they create competition and increase disease risk.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Most problems come from inconsistent watering — both drought and overwatering can affect the taste and quality of cucumbers. It’s also not recommended to water with cold water.

A common mistake is planting cucumbers too early in cold soil or too close to each other. Excessive nitrogen fertilization can also lead to more leaf growth at the expense of fruit.

📦 Storage

Fresh cucumbers taste best right after harvesting. At room temperature, they last a few days, while in the refrigerator they can be stored for up to one or two weeks.
