Golden Columbine, Southwestern Aquilegia. Aquilegia chrysantha A. Grey. Seeds.
Golden Columbine is a perennial, deciduous plant native to the western United States and Mexico.
Aquilegia blooms in spring, and blooms best in full sun to partial shade, with less showy flowers.
It tolerates a variety of soils and is resistant to insect damage.
Cutting back the flower stalks can encourage further flowering.
Poorly drained soils can cause rot.
Aquilegia does not like consistently wet soil, which can cause root rot.
Aquilegia can be sown in the fall in a permanent location, or sown in pots in spring and grown from seedlings. If the seeds have not undergone a cold period, or stratification, the flowers will bloom the following year after planting. In the first year, aquilegia forms dense, beautiful clumps.
