A sunny, cool, open or slightly shaded place is suitable for growing delphiniums.
Delphiniums are planted in any type of deeply cultivated, loose, calcareous (pH 6.5 -7.5), nutrient-rich (fertile) soil. The soil should be moderately moist, yet permeable; high beds should be created in low places. . Delphiniums need a leeward position.
Well-established delphiniums can grow in one place without transplanting for up to 8-10 years. In a permanent place, the growth distances for delphiniums are 50-70cm.
Densely planted delphiniums languish, bloom poorly and are more susceptible to disease.
Delphiniums are patient plants, watering is only necessary during periods of drought during flowering. Delphiniums can re-bloom in the fall if they are pruned after the first bloom.
