Pepino (Solanum muricatum) – Sweet Melon Fruit, Melon Pear | Heart Garden Studio
Pepino (Solanum muricatum) is still a rare sight in our gardens, but this superfruit is worth growing.
It is easy to cultivate, decorative and full of flavour – a true jewel for greenhouse lovers.
🌿 Health & Taste
Pepino fruits are rich in nutrients, minerals (especially potassium and iodine) and vitamins C and A.
They have a refreshing, mild melon-like flavour and fit perfectly into a healthy diet.
You can enjoy Pepino fruits fresh, or add them to fruit salads, desserts, ice cream, creams, and cakes.
They are also great for freezing, drying, jams, or compotes.
Like many fruits, Pepino pairs beautifully with meat dishes, sauces and stews.
🌱 Growing
Pepino grows best in warm conditions – in a greenhouse, nutrient-rich soil, or large pots.
It forms a bushy plant up to 1 m high, so it may need support.
-
Sow seeds: in February, in moist soil.
-
Transplant: 40–50 cm apart.
-
Harvest: from September to October.
-
Seed pack: 3 pcs.
❄️ Overwintering
Overwintering in pots is difficult, as new shoots keep growing in winter, causing the plant to stretch due to lack of light.
For best results, grow Pepino as an annual and replant each spring.
🌾 Tips
-
Needs warmth, sun and protection from wind.
-
Water regularly but avoid overwatering.
-
Ripe fruits turn yellow with violet streaks and have a sweet melon aroma.
