Cucumber leaf sunflowers. Mix. Seeds.
Sunflowers are often called sunflowers and are believed to follow the sun. The truth is not quite like that - a mature flower faces east and does not rotate. In contrast, the flowers and leaves of young sunflowers do rotate a full 180º from east to west during the day. At night, they return to the east. This is because sunflowers have special motor or moving cells in their stem or trunk that can rapidly absorb and lose water, thus changing the length of the stem on the shady side and a new plant can "follow the sun".
Sunflowers are annuals, so they must be sown anew every year. The seeds do not need to be specially prepared for sowing, but if you want to especially promote seed germination, they can be soaked in lukewarm water for 12 hours. When sowing directly into the bed
(in a sunny place, in nutrient-rich soil) it is important to ensure that the seeds are not sown too close to each other – there should be at least 30-40 cm of space between them. The soil should be loosened to a depth of 30 cm, the seeds are sown and then covered with a 1 cm layer of soil. Then the seeds are pressed and watered. When sowing in pots in April, 3-4 seeds can be sown together. Germinate in 10-14 days, maintaining a temperature of 21°C.
Growing and caring for sunflowers. A suitable place for growing sunflowers will be a sunny or partially shaded place, where there are no strong winds, but they will feel good anywhere. The soil should be fertile – rich in nutrients, not too wet and certainly not acidic. When grown in flower pots, balcony boxes, tubs or other containers, sunflowers need regular watering and feeding - fertilizing with liquid or soluble complex fertilizer intended for flowering plants. In order for sunflowers to bloom as abundantly as possible, both indoors and in containers, the faded flower heads should be pinched off as soon as they have bloomed.
Pests. Sunflower seedlings are especially tasty for snails and slugs. Sunflowers grown indoors can be damaged most by red spider mites - the first signs are fine webs, because the spider mites themselves are difficult to notice. Increasing humidity and misting can help.
Nectar plant. Sunflowers are one of the best honey plants. Up to 50 kg of honey can be obtained from one hectare.
